ELLA-Stapler

Endo-Luminal Linear Anastomosis – Stapler

IDIBELL

TRL: 1-3
Ongoing

The Endo-Luminal Linear Anastomosis (ELLA) – Stapler is a new surgical device that involves a new concept for the realization of intestinal anastomosis.

The ELLA-stapler serves as a therapeutic tool in the construction of an intestinal anastomosis, specifically intracorporeal ileo-colic anastomosis after a right laparoscopic hemicolectomy. The aim of this project is to design a new stapler that will allow surgeons to create an ileum-colic anastomosis stapled surgery without much technical difficulties. The ELLA-stapler will be an everyday tool, which will minimize technical expertise requirements, not only in open but also in laparoscopic intervention.

The ileum-colon anastomosis is not easy to perform with current staplers, but the new stapler is going to reduce the operating time. The ileum-colon anastomosis will specially be standardized, thus reducing the risk of postoperative complications and including improved patient results in less time. For this reason, the ELLA-stapler is an improvement compared with available devices and current stapler techniques.

The device has been invented by Dr. Thomas Golda, a surgeon from the Coloproctology Unit of the Bellvitge University Hospital and it is strongly supported by all the members of this Unit. Furthermore, Bellvitge Hospital is one of the worldwide pioneers in colorectal surgery specialization. The project of Dr.Golda is also supported by patient organizations and other experts from the same field.

In collaboration with IBV, a first class technology center with a lot of experience, Dr Golda will develop a prototype. Afterwards, a proof of concept (POC) will be made in IDIBELL facilities, using a pig animal model, in order to verify the correct functioning of the prototype. To achieve the development of the prototype and the proof of concept, a team of engineers, doctors, managers, and technology transfer officers will work together.

Market studies have been made showing that, in general, it is expected that the market exhibits a steady growth rate, because of the growing elderly population, the availability of new therapeutic techniques and the recent focus on products for wound healing, sutures and staples. The annual growth will be around 6% and will reach a potential market of 5.000 million dollars in the coming years.
